“My name is Elia, and I am 8y and I am from South Sudan. I have been at the hospital for the last 7 days. But I am not sick, my brother is. He is getting better though. His name is Jeremiah and he is 10 months old. He was unconscious and almost dying when he arrived here. He could not eat or drink, and he was breathing very fast. My mother was crying a lot. The doctors and the nurses gave him many injections, and water through the veins. They call it Malaria. Many children in my village die because of this bad disease. Doctors say it comes from mosquito bites, but we don’t have money to buy nets to protect us. I am very happy that Jeremiah is starting to eat and drink, and I want to go back to school, but my mother had to go to work in the fields and get food for us, so I have to take care of my brother… The other day I saw a small baby that came very sick and doctors could not save him… everybody was very sad, so I guess we are a very lucky family. I only have two wishes: I want to ask men in my country to stop to fight, because war is very bad for everybody and I want to be a nurse when I grow up and help sick people and be kind to them. That’s what I want.”
